Suncare

Protect against UV-induced skin barrier damage.

More than half of lifetime sun damage
occurs before age 18.1

UV exposure can lead to skin barrier damage and ceramide profile alterations, consistent with impairment observed in barrier-compromised dermatological conditions.2

AAP guidelines on limiting sun exposure in children3

  • Skin cancer prevention is a lifelong effort, and beginning in infancy, at least one health maintenance visit per year should include advice about UVR exposure.
  • Sun-protection practices tend to wane in early childhood. Beginning at age 9 or 10 years, it may be helpful for pediatricians to discuss sun protection with children, together with parents, to encourage joint responsibility for the child’s sun protection.

The importance of ceramide-containing suncare

New UV research demonstrates that real-life, daily levels of UV exposure (2 MED) can compromise skin barrier integrity.2

2 MED = Approximately 2 hours of UV exposure in NYC, on a sunny day in July, for Fitzpatrick skin type 3.

UV exposure (2 MED) significantly disrupts normal cell shape. Ceramide-containing suncare can help protect against this skin barrier damage.2

UV exposure (2 MED) significantly reduces ceramide 3 levels and impairs the quality of barrier essential ceramides, including 1, 3, & 6-II. Ceramide-containing suncare can help protect against alterations to the skin ceramide profile.4
